Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity confirmed as Charity of the Day for Inter Service Championship Round 1

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity has been confirmed as Charity of the Day when the Royal Navy take on the Royal Air Force in the opening round of the 2024 Inter Service Championship on Saturday, 20 April.

The Navy and RAF put on an afternoon of competitive rugby at Plymouth’s Brickfields Stadium in 2023, with the Senior Men drawing 13-all and the RAF’s Senior Women pipping the Navy 17-10.

The teams return to Plymouth in 2024, home of the largest naval base in Western Europe and focal point for the Royal Navy since 1691, and Commander Alan Church (Royal Navy, Rtd), Chair of the match’s organising committee, says that the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), which provided a direct welfare grant to nearly 24,000 Royal Navy Sailors and Royal Marines in 2022, is at the heart of the city’s community.

“On behalf of the match committee I am delighted to make this announcement,” he commented. “Many serving personnel will have colleagues or former colleagues who will have been supported by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, which does sterling work to help personnel, veterans and their families alike.

“The Inter Service Championship is always one of the highlights of the year for our three Services, and we are looking forward to a memorable day at Brickfields Stadium in April. Hopefully there will be a big crowd who will give generously to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, too.”

Royal Navy, Northampton Saints and Fiji star, Sam Matavesi, is an ambassador for RNRMC, and he hopes that the fixture can raise both money and profile for the charity.

“I am absolutely thrilled that the Inter Service Match Committee has chosen the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) as the charity of the day for the Royal Navy Vs. RAF match at Brickfields in Plymouth,” he added. “It's a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and vital funds for the support of our sailors, marines, and their families. Thank you to everyone involved for their incredible support.”

“We are thrilled to have been selected as Charity of the Day for the Inter Service Championship rugby match between the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force,” said RNRMC Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Jameson.

“It is a fantastic event to be a part of, and a great opportunity to spread the word about the RNRMC and what we do – ensuring sailors, Marines, and their families are supported, for life. We wish all the teams taking part the very best of luck.”
