Families’ Activity Breaks announced as Charity of the Day for RAF v Army 2025

The RAF v Army Match Committee has announced that the Charity of the Day for the Inter Service Championship’s final day in 2025 will be Families’ Activity Breaks (FAB).

FAB (registered charity no. 1178108) provides fun and challenging activity camps around the UK for bereaved military families, and a welcome break to meet and socialise with others who have experienced a similar loss. FAB is a non-public funded, tri-Service charity.

FAB is in its 15th year of delivering camps, and in that time the charity has established peer support networks for families to support each other through traumatic times.

The charity’s backbone is its volunteer network, all of whom must be serving in the Armed Forces, a veteran or Defence civilian. All volunteers are trained in bereavement support for all the family members, to prepare them for their time on a FAB camp.

FAB has been chosen by the Army Rugby Union (ARU), which is this year’s designated home team at Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester, and ARU Vice-Chair, Brig Gary McDade, says that the Inter Service Championship provides an ideal opportunity to make a difference to smaller military charities, raising both finance and awareness.

“The Inter Service Championship is a major event in the military sporting calendar, with the Army v Royal Air Forces games at Kingsholm gaining popularity year on year,” he says. “The weekend provides a fantastic platform to highlight the outstanding work being undertaken by Service charities, and the Army Rugby Union is thrilled to afford this opportunity to FAB in 2025, to enable them to showcase their incredible support for bereaved families from across the Service community.”

“FAB is delighted to be nominated as the Charity of the Day by the ARU,” says Chief Executive, Maj Karen Tait. “This provides the opportunity for us to not only raise the profile of FAB but raise some much-needed funds allowing us to keep on providing the camps to our bereaved military families. FAB is a family these families never asked to be a part of, but we are delighted to have been welcomed into another family, the Inter Services rugby family.”

Both the Senior Men and Senior Women will be playing at Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester, on Saturday, 17 May, 2025.

In 2024 the Army and RAF played two entertaining matches, both of which decided the overall destiny of the Inter Service Championship titles. Already nearly 3,000 tickets have been sold, and a crowd in excess of last year’s 7,000 is likely.
