AET Jack Wright talks about moving to the Senior Men's Navy Squad

A current Navy U23 player, AET Jack Wright, talks about his move to the Senior Men's team.

Name – AET Jack Wright

Playing Position – Hooker

How did you prepare to handle the increased physical and tactical demands of senior-level rugby compared to the under-23s?

My preparation was mainly based around getting myself playing at a decent level consistently outside of Military rugby, so that I was able to bring things I had learnt or been taught back into the Military environment. Playing consistently on weekends and training mid-week helps so much with your rugby ability & knowledge.

What aspects of your game did you feel you needed the most improvement to succeed at the senior XV level?

The senior group were straight with me from the off about what I had to improve. They wanted me to be more dominant in defence and work on my set piece, which is exactly what I did, always doing extras after training or days off.

How did you plan to adjust to the faster pace and higher intensity of senior rugby matches?

I don’t think there is any type of physical preparation you can do to prepare you for rugby! Getting games under your belt and training is the best way to get the best out of yourself when you’re on the pitch.

In what ways have your coaches and teammates helped you integrate into the senior squad, both on and off the field?

My teammates were unbelievable for me in my support; the likes of Prids from the U23s (obviously a Navy Rugby legend), along with Gaz Evans who pretty much took me under his wing from day one. Plus, Sam Matavesi and Rhys Williams were constantly helping me with extras and tips. The guys at Taunton have been great too - the senior hookers there always have time to help, as do the boys in the Navy set up involved at Taunton. Even off the field, being the youngest guy in the whole team, the team were amazing. Coming through the U23s with Dom Cleverley, we built a great friendship off the field, where he helped me introduce myself to the whole team, along with many the boys I work with like Jay Toogood, Chris Mills and Ben Chambers.

What are your goals now that you've made the transition to the senior XV?

I would say my goals now are to keep pushing to show my ability. My competition for the starting shirt is incredible so I know that I have to keep on top of my game. I know now that I have the credibility to put my name in the mix for game days, but all in all the main goal is to become Inter Service champions again.
